The Rise of False UX Career Currency (Milestones in Dysfunction, Part 3)

Now, we all learned about UX maturity, those who did learn about it.

We learned about UX maturity.

as it pertains to organizations.

Usually, it's about how easy is it for you to do UX in your org, how much support do you have, how much leadership is in your corner when you're doing UX maturity, and people would give a scale.

There's a lot of different models that have been published over the years.

A lot of different models of UX maturity, the most popular, of course, with Nielsen Norman Group, they had one that people embraced for years.

They recently updated it.

And I have called that out on a regular basis.

Not only did they update it, and that's fine.

You want to update it? Great.

However, it is now politically correct, which is a sign of detrimental UX maturity or taking a step back.

because there were factors in the initial model that are no longer in the current model.

But I'm not gonna get into that today.

That's how I call that out for somebody to go take a look at it, go find it.

Go look at the old one, look at the new one, look at the differences, and you will see exactly what I'm talking about.

There used to be a part there about skunk works in the earlier model.

There used to be a part about people being hostile towards usability.

That is no longer there.

But if you're doing the work, you know it's still there in a responsible organization, I might add, because now because of what's going on in UX and because UX maturity has taken such a gigantic step backwards, now that politically correct model seems to fit.

But now you don't identify those other elements.

And now because you don't identify them, you will not address them.

And when you don't address them, that means they will be allowed, I should say, to stay, to fester, and to continue to wreak havoc in organizations and discipline-wide and as it pertains to the individuals in each one of those dysfunctional environments.

UX is not a dysfunctional discipline.

It is, however, operating in a dysfunctional way.

So the sub-series is called Milestones in Dysfunction.
