Bonus Episode: Caribbean American Heritage & Identity (w/ Ann-Marie Maloney)

yeah this is um a part of this as we're heading into now what i like to call we talked about this before we got on the air We're heading into the second Caribbean Carnival season of the calendar.

And those who obviously follow Caribbean Carnivals, or if you don't, the Carnival season sort of starts in February with Trinidad's Carnival, which is the big Caribbean Carnival that everyone likes to talk about.

It continues on to Jamaica.

I believe it is also in the St. Kitts Carnival.

I think maybe also St. Thomas.

And then in between, there's also the Carnival...

in Rio and then our own carnival edition we have here with Mardi Gras in New Orleans which has a lot of influence in Caribbean culture though many people don't want to admit that but there's so many

influence

you know from the different from the Haitian and African influences that come from what was in New Orleans went with Mardi Gras a lot of it is all based around the whole concept of carnival and what that celebration is supposed to be about But now that we're in August, heading into September, you start in July with St. Vincent, which Emery is very familiar with, and partially also my family, which we'll get into in a second.

Heading into August, you have Crop Over, which is Barbados, which is another part of my family that I'm very familiar with as well.

Spice Mass or Grenada's Carnival, which is where my family's from.

For those of you who all see the video, if you're not, I'm holding up the shirt that has my Spice Island flag, you know.

The red, green, and gold of beautiful and sweet Grenada, pure Grenada, as we call it nowadays.

And then you also have St. Lucia's Carnival.

And then you round out heading into Labor Day with the famous Labor Day Carnival on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, New York.

Which is your home, Anne-Marie, New York and Brooklyn.

And then you close out the carnival season, the big one, in Miami in October.

And so then, as Anne-Marie stated, you have the holidays.

And then you do it all over again in February afternoon.

And we do it all over again.

So we thought it was appropriate to do this.

And when Emery and I started talking and we found out our backgrounds and she told me where she was from, I was like, well, my wife's from there.

And, you know, and so that struck very close to me because St. Vincent is on the northern end of the tip of the Grenadines and Grenada is at the southern tip of the Grenadines.

And I've sailed the Grenadines with my father many times.
