What’s it actually like running the biggest magic wholesaler in the world? In this episode of the Slightly Twisted Podcast, Allan from The Sleight Co and Luke from Twisted Minds Magic sit down with…
But yeah, so one question I've actually... kind of had on my mind since kind of having twisted minds and ordering from Murphy's is that, now correct me if I'm wrong, but Murphy's was founded by your father, right? Correct.
Mark Murphy.
And in 1998, that was kind of the business was set up.
Yeah.
I've tried Googling a little bit and I can't really find much about your father, Mark.
I mean, so was he essentially a magician? Was he a hobbyist? Was he a professional performer? Or was he just like a businessman who saw a niche market?
But prior to that, Mike Maxwell, if you're familiar with the name, ran A1 Multimedia and he did his own retail.
And so my aunt reached out to my dad and said, Hey, you know, Mike needs a little bit of help.
Would you mind kind of stepping in, working with him, see if we can get things kind of trending back in the right direction.
So my dad, up until that point, like, didn't perform magic, didn't even know really like the magic industry existed beyond what he knew Mike was doing.
And so he worked at A1 Multimedia with my uncle Mike and kind of got things jamming there.
And at the time, A1, they were like filming their own VHS tapes back in the day, you know, and selling retail and all that.
And so my dad kind of got exposed to the industry as a whole and who the key players were, who the distributors were, who the retailers were.
And once he got the company going really well, he told my uncle Mike, hey, look, now that I've kind of seen things, I have an idea.
That way I can still support you by buying all the VHS tapes you make, right? You film your new project.
And then I'll be able to do my own thing and supply, you know, all the retailers.
