You know, earlier this year, the Louisiana legislature passed legislation eliminating three sections of Orleans Parish Criminal District Court.
Now, this restructuring, they say, was intended to reduce the number of judgeships, and supporters argued that Orleans Parish had more criminal district judges than necessary.
And it said, and after they warned that and saying that, as a scam to me, the area's got a whole bunch of the money that came to Orleans Parish.
And but they claimed that Orleans Parish had more criminal judges than necessary when compared to other jurisdictions.
But the decision created a very interesting situation for the judges whose seats were affected.
Judge Rhonda Good Douglas was serving in Section E, one of the sections slated for elimination.
Judge Leon Roche was serving in Division I. Interestingly, Section I had initially been targeted for elimination, but during the legislative process, that changed.
So Judge Roche had a seat that survived the restructuring, but he didn't qualify to run again for Section I.
Instead, Judge Roche qualified to run against Judge Camille Burris, who sat in Section H since 1998.
And Judge Good-Douglas, whose section was eliminated, qualified for Judge Roche's Section IC, and she had no opposition.
So now we have Judge Burris, who has been on the criminal district court bench for approximately 28 years, facing off with Judge Roche, who was elected in 2023.
