The Inevitable Demise of Instagram

Many people view Instagram as a permanent fixture of modern life with billions of users, massive advertising revenue, and deep integration into culture, it appears nearly invincible.

20 years ago, MySpace also seemed invincible.

They seemed untouchable.

Before that, AOL dominated the internet.

And then you've had other platforms pop up over the course of the years, such as Vine, Google+, Clubhouse, Tumblr, all experiencing periods of explosive growth before fading into relative irrelevance.

The central lesson is simple.

Technology changes, human behavior evolves, and no communication platform remains dominant forever.

Instagram, like I said, may survive for many years still.

But the forces that eventually diminished MySpace are already visible today.

Technology companies often assume growth can continue indefinitely.

In reality, every platform progresses through a predictable life cycle.

which is as follows.

Innovation, number one.

Rapid adoption, two.

Mainstream dominance, three.

Saturation, four.

And then the decline or transformation, five.
