Alex is joined by special guest Telly Leung to talk about the 2016 Original Broadway Cast Album for In Transit, Broadway's first (and so far only) acapella musical! Music, lyrics, & book by Kristen…
[laughs] It- So as we go through this, I'll be very upfront, I am exactly the targa- target audience for this show.
This- so this kind of came about during the height of the a cappella craze with The Sing-Off, you know, Pentatonix.
Do you think that we'll see more of this type of a cappella musical, or was that kind of its moment, and maybe it, you know, caught fire once but won't get so lucky again?
Uh, it, it's my hope that, like, time will tell, but I think w- when we look back on this, w- we'll say, "Oh, right, In Transit was the first a cappella Broadway musical, and they sort of cracked the ceiling and opened the door for other a cappella things," whether that's a cappella elements in...
I, I mean, uh, b- In Transit is a very sort of traditional ensemble Broadway musical, right? But, like, m- you know, I'm working on Masquerade right now, which feels like we are making new theater.
It's like an immersive show has never been this musical, and a musical's never been this immersive.
So we feel like Masquerade is something, is like a new kind of theater that we're making, and who's to say that in the future there isn't some immersive a cappella maybe the audience is participating thing, you know, that happens that, um, that feels... that is, like, its own thing but could not have existed had In Transit not been around in 2016.
I, I'm not sure if, if there'll be another sort of traditional big commercial Broadway musical like In Transit again, but I, I do think that it'll open doors for something new in the future, and we have yet to see what that is.
... as you mentioned, things don't have to stay exactly how they've been with the form and the structure, so, uh, I look forward to seeing what that comes about as.
Um, I, uh, first of all, it's an a cappella musical, so you're going to a musical, but there are n- there are no instrumentalists.
