We had a great time talking with pal and local legend Matt Barnes for this edition of the HBAC. We go through the arc of Matt’s career and unearth some great stories and bits of wisdom for people…
Interestingly, Hilliard is at one of those inflection points, a lot of development going on.
We've talked about Colorado Mountain Sports kind of becoming the latest to try to fulfill that infill development with residential and retail components along corridors that the city's deemed critical.
A lot of enterprises now are starting in that pop-up phase or mobile phase that they're taking limited stabs at things and trying to get that foothold.
What are some of the things you think make suburban environments fertile ground for the type of social...
Kind of engineering you were talking about, that type of reacquaint yourself with those neighbors, not just next door, but four or five houses down in that third space or in something else.
And it's not one that I think they're... they're aware of or that they're taking as seriously because they put up the thing they build it and hope that everyone will come and then when the players come they're like yeah we'll have a juice shop here and a yogurt shop here and uh you'll put a bar at the end of that and then their kai bowl place yeah and they're hot
They're not thinking of the mix of vendors that they're allowing in and what those vendors can do individually and collectively for their core demo.
I had a conversation with this developer in Cincinnati, and we were kind of brainstorming over lunch one day, and he mentioned that he was interested.
He's a big... fitness lifestyle guy cold plunge cycling CrossFit and he was like you know I had this opportunity to build a mixed-use residential space and our idea is to have it all fitness focused Where all of the vendors are, there's a yoga studio, and then there's a juice shop, and then there's a vitamin shop, and all of them work synergistically.
They can stand alone on their own, and then synergistically, they all kind of target a type.
And I was like, wow, that's a brilliant idea, you know, because that... has weight.
And I, I really believe that, uh, COVID, um, it forced a digital life on us that now everyone is kind of like, you know, adopted organically.
