Man Made Monster

A year later, he was summoned to Universal's front office, who persuaded him to sign a contract for a series of films with their horror department.

The first of these was a cheap run-of-the-mill shocker entitled Man Made Monster.

As I remember your story, you were brought up in an orphanage.

There was a man there.

First, let's consider the case of Dan McCormick, the man who used to do an electrical act at fairs and sideshows.

Well, ironically enough, the last act of his little drama will find him dying in the electric chair, where all the immunity in the world won't help him.

With Man Made Monster, Universal were clearly moving the horror genre from the more literary efforts of the Laemmle era to an altogether more action-oriented style.

These films were cheap to produce, and people liked them.

Hmm.

But he didn't actually act in a horror film until 1941 when he appeared in Man Made Monster and of course The Wolf Man.

And this film's, The Wolf Man's, success and legendary status, this propels him into, uh, horror icon territory pretty quickly, uh, with subsequent horror films including, um, well, The Ghost of Frankenstein, which we've mentioned, in which he plays the monster.

Uh, 1942's The Mummy's Tomb, in which he plays the mummy.
