With my patients who are on GLP-1, I really encourage a lot of resistance training and movement and slower weight loss, because if you're losing weight at a bariatric level, you're going to lose a lot of muscle.

Now, what we know from regular weight studies is that about 10% of the weight you lose when you have any sort of weight loss is going to be muscle or lean tissue, not just muscle, but lean tissue, we'll say.

So 90% is about fat in a normal weight loss if you do it with diet and exercise.

but there was a study that was presented at Obesity Week last year that showed that with semaglutide, it's about 20%.

And that's amazing because you see influencers all over the internet saying, if you use these GLP-1s, you're going to lose 60% of the weight you lose is going to be fat.

But there's a few things I always tell every patient when we start the medicine is you've got to eat protein and you have to lift weights and you have to do them together, especially for women.

The data tell us that if you want to maintain your muscle mass, you can't just eat protein.

And lifting weights is really important, but you need the amount of protein to also fuel your muscles.
