8. Why midlife isn't a crisis, it's a wake-up call
C
19:39Charlotte BraithwaiteGUEST
It's who am I apart from my family? It's the process of individuation.
C
19:45Charlotte BraithwaiteGUEST
And midlife is sort of when it has to be reconstructed, often sort of in a quieter way.
C
19:54Charlotte BraithwaiteGUEST
Like we said, it's more of an internal, but equally destabilizing pressure because it's the who am I, apart from the roles that I've spent 20 years maybe building, whether that's sort of parent or provider or the reliable one, that it's that rather than sort of adolescence that goes, who will I become? Midlife goes, was this who I actually wanted to become or who I have become through default? And so there's an invitation to start sort of exploring identity versus the roles that I have.
C
20:30Charlotte BraithwaiteGUEST
And so often what we see in that midlife crisis, let's say, is like quite adolescent behavior.
C
20:37Charlotte BraithwaiteGUEST
It's quite risk-taking.

And we had a fabulous chat, and, and she brought something up, because we know what Middle Age is about now.
M
4:38Myf WarhurstHOST
It's about all the rage we're all feeling in perimenopause and menopause and how to channel it, because it is justified, and I go into, I go into great length as to why rage is a perfectly rational response to some of the things that have been happening to us for, well, since the beginning of time, actually.
M
4:56Myf WarhurstHOST
But we were having a discussion, and she brought up the idea that I don't think is unfamiliar to most of us, okay? And this idea was that she's planned with her girlfriends the commune that she's gonna live in when she gets older, because she, like many, are watching how our parents are aging, and for some it's, it's difficult given the nature of the way that we live in this nuclear family.

What if we're finally old enough to realize how to pa- how d- how quickly life moves and young enough to still do something about it? What if there's a season where we stop asking, "Who does everyone need to be?" And instead say, "Who am I right now?" Not who, who I was at 25, not who I was when the kids were little, not who did I become to survive last season, but who am I right now? What makes me laugh? What gives me energy? What am I curious about? What have I been putting off? Who do I love become, being around? That's so important to just understand the impact of your circle and finding joy in the people that surround you.
