Medjugorje Unveiled: The Journey from Village Visions to Vatican Recognition

Sounds like a plan.

So let's, um, first start with the origin story.

Uh, what happened in Međugorje, and when did it happen?

Yeah.

So all the way back in June 1981, six young people in the village of Međugorje, in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina, reported seeing an apparition of the Virgin Mary, whom they referred to as Gospa, the local kind of word for Our Lady.

So these visionaries said the messages centered on peace and conversion and prayer, fasting, reconciliation, a lot of the sacraments of the Catholic Church.

And so word spread pretty quickly.

Within a few years, Međugorje grew from just a small farming village into one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world.

Several of the original visionaries have said that they continue to report receiving messages to this day, more than four decades later.

Yeah, and that's a remarkable amount of growth for a village most people never heard of before 1981.

That's not very long ago at all.

Um, so what's kept people coming back, um, to Međugorje for over 40 years now?

Yeah, definitely the recurring themes at Međugorje that people will learn about and really experience as part of their pilgrimage there, it's peace, prayer, fasting, the scripture reading, and reconciliation with God and with others.

So these themes are delivered within a distinctly devotional framework.

Uh, out of the different pilgrimages you can do around the world, I would say Međugorje is one of the most focused.

Mm.

It really is all about the pilgrimage.

It's not about, like, "Oh, I'm gonna stop by and tick off the box." It's, it's really spending time in adoration, prayer, things like that there.

So the message emphasizes, you know, a return to the sacraments we talked about, you know, confession, partaking in the Eucharist, how important the rosary is, you know, as the path Our Lady calls pilgrims towards.

And it's that combination of kind of a clear spiritual call and the specific devotional practice that's really kind of shaped everything that Međugorje has become, you know, from the humble, kind of started out as just a farming town, to now they have millions of pilgrims a year for, to a still very small town.

Wow.

Thankfully, they don't all come on the same day.
