So places like Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar reaching an absolute boiling point with pricing and crowd density.

People are just desperate for an escape hatch.

And the National Park, which is the marquee attraction, costs about $31 for an adult entry.

And then, of course, there are those incredibly cheap passenger ferries from Dubrovnik running roughly $6 to $12 one way.

But like we just established with our opening nightmare scenario, cheap transit does not equal a cheap vacation.

On Tuesday the 9th of October 1934, however, the 45-year-old dictator was forced to make an exception.

That was the day he arrived in Marseille in the south of France on the Yugoslav navy destroyer, the Dubrovnik.

He was making a state visit and hoping to strengthen an alliance between the two countries.

He was met by the French Foreign Minister, Louis Bartu.

His killer, Chonizemsky, was cut down by the sword of a French mounted policeman.

He was then attacked by the crowd and also killed.

Alexander's body was returned home on the Dubrovnik.

He was buried at the Memorial Church of St. George, which had been built by his father, before eventually being transferred to a mausoleum in Beograd, as his will stipulated.

Having started our planning with the intention of making travel as easy as possible, I don't know how we managed to finish with three days of travelling to get home.

We had to fly back to India and spend a night there, fly to Heathrow, and the next morning fly to Dubrovnik with a stop in Zagreb.

It all went smoothly enough, but we were shattered when we got home.

Eating hamburgers with stationed American troops to boost morale, navigating this grueling schedule.

So by the time they're on this final leg toward Dubrovnik, fatigue is definitely a factor.

For sure.

And one last idea because Montenegro pairs beautifully with a trip into neighbouring Croatia.

You see, Dubrovnik is only a couple of hours up the coast from Kotor and plenty of people fly into one country and out of the other.

It's very easy to stitch the two together into one glorious Adriatic road trip.

I did this a couple summers ago with a friend and I'm seriously considering this as a trip with my husband for next spring, especially after recording this episode in Montenegro and my recent episode through southern Croatia.
