We're talking about what does it mean to be independent, especially as a Catholic.
What does that really mean? You know, when we look at the 4th of July, we look at our independence as a country.
If we look at what our forefathers said we were independent from, we were worried about the tyranny of England, right? So at that point, they were saying, when in the course of human events, our Declaration of Independence, it becomes necessary for one people, right? And we're going to avoid the tyranny of Why? Because the tyranny was preventing us from being able to be free, not just free people to do whatever we wanted, but free to do what we knew was supposed to be the right thing to do.
I'm not saying I just want to be free, but there's something keeping me from doing what I need to do.
What does that mean or how does that translate into our Catholic faith? The big topic that I think of is the topic of forgiveness.
But when we think about what does it mean to be Catholic? What does it mean to be able to follow my faith? What does it mean to be able to be free to follow my faith? One, I want to be able to express myself.
That's one thing where we say, I want to be independent to be able to follow my faith the way I want to.
Let's just say there's no government entity or there's not somebody coming in telling me I can't follow my faith, which that's not necessarily the case right now.
We always are fighting to be able to worship as we know we want to, according to our catechism, according to the deposit of the faith, according to the way we know we are supposed to worship.
A lot of times we don't realize that we are not free to follow our faith because we tie our own selves up.
