A study through the book of Galatians
I give you that image to say that is the terminology Paul uses in our text today.
For some reason...
Paul reaches for this beast-like behavior of biting and devouring and consuming one another.
That's the behavior of an animal.
That's what Paul's talking about.
In verse 15, Bite, devour, watch out that you would not be consumed by one another.
This terminology is that of beast-like behavior.
But remember, who is Paul talking to? Who's Paul talking about? He's not talking about animals.
He's not talking about people outside of the church.
Paul is saying this of the church.
That the church will act like animals.
And so let's understand the image that Paul is laying out for us.
He's speaking as if there are those in the church that are not serving one another from love.
They're not caring.
They're not kind.
They're not compassionate.
That there are those, even in the church, Who make decisions and efforts to wreak havoc in their relationships.
That they'll gossip.
That they'll choose to slander those around them.
They'll choose jealousy and lust and greed and addiction.
They'll make those choices and live out that nature.
We don't like this.
But Paul talks as if there are those who portray holiness on Sunday, yet pursue sinfulness on Monday.
