The first time I learned about this, I was buying a used 1996 Porsche, and I brought a check, and it was at a dealer, and they were like, "You can't take it away 'cause we can't get it to smog 'cause the monitors aren't set." And I was like, "What on earth are monitors?" And I was 19.

Uh, and, uh, anyway, they were like, "Yeah, you gotta, like, drive the car a bunch for the monitors to set." And I was like, "That smells mysterious." Anyway, that is a...

Basically there are, there are all these...

In OBD-II cars, the car was a '96, which is the first year of OBD-II.

Before that was OBD-I, and then the, in those cases, smog used to be conducted by just, uh, smelling what was coming out of the exhaust pipe, basically.

Yeah, you lock your, you lock the car in the garage-

[laughs]

... let it run for half an hour, and see if you're coming out standing up.

And then you don't need a smog check anymore.

OBD meaning onboard diagnostics.

Correct.

So there was a federal mandate for car companies to include, uh, uh, an onboard diagnostics system to monitor the emissions systems on your car.

Uh, and this has gotten progressively more complex, but when OBD-II came out, uh, they had a standardized diagnostic port that anyone with the little diagnostic to- It was used in every car.

And, uh, it has, like, a standardized set of monitors for various aspects like, uh, EVAP-
