[upbeat music] H- how did you get started? How did that happen?

Oh, um, how did I get started? Well, um, so I was in high school when they were trying to decide whether to invade Iraq.

I was a junior when 9/11 happened, and I was a senior, uh, in 2003.

You know, that was all any of us could talk about, and I knew I wanted to go to Washington for college 'cause I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to be part of whatever it was.

And because all that was going on, I thought maybe I would try to be a foreign correspondent or a war correspondent at that time.

And I started basically looking for internships.

I was one of those people who probably spent more time working than actually attending college in the years that I was in college.

Where were you at college?

I went to George Washington University.

So, so you're in DC.

So I'm in DC.

You know, you know the type, right?

[chuckles]

Uh, but I got an internship with NBC News, actually, um, in their political unit, uh, in 2005.

That was, uh, eventually how you worked yourself to NBC and MSNBC.

Sorta kinda.

What u- what unit were you in? Were you in a unit?

So I worked for the political unit, which, uh, was basically in charge of covering campaigns and elections, right? But it was 2005, which was, like, the most boring year to be covering elections.

It's right after a presidential.

The only elections that were going on were governor's races in Virginia and New Jersey, but I still loved it.

From there, I, I did, uh, more internships, and eventually I, um, I got a job right out of college at the AP, and I just got hooked on the sort of adrenaline of daily news, um, and really being in the thick of everything.

And I did take a little bit of a break.

I went to graduate school in the UK, but really that taught me-

... that I was a-- Yeah, I went to Cambridge for my, my graduate degree.
