Memorial Day

You can have a lineup full of promise, and that's nice to have.

But if your starters are regularly exiting early, You're putting a massive workload on the bullpen, and by August, those relievers can look like they've been asked to pitch for a doubleheader every day since Memorial Day.

The organization needs to start exploring starting pitchers who fit its competitive timeline.

That means evaluating free agents, potential trades, internal prospects, and the cost of each option.

Most of those fellas didn't.

But every once in a while as we got older, usually after a couple of beers on Memorial Day or something like that, he'd open up a little and tell us a story or two.

Now he kept it all very PG-13 at first and kept the darker stories to himself.

But then one Thanksgiving after everyone else had retired and it was just me and him watching old movies, he told me one that he'd never told anyone before, let alone grandma or my dad.

The days are long, but the years are short.

How many parents agree with that? Some long days out there, every campus, long days out there, but then you look up and they're leaving the house, right? And so I remember last year, it was Memorial Day weekend and my daughter who's 12 now, she was 11 then.

And I just remember thinking on Memorial Day weekend, a very sobering thought.

I think I only have six or seven more Memorial Day weekends with her before she'll be out the house.

And all of a sudden, I understood the brevity of time.

And my response was, oh, not that I need to be a perfect parent, I just need to be intentional.

We have that obviously on November 11th, sorry.

We have a celebration for Memorial Day.

On Memorial Day, we have a wreath laying where we go out to the Flat River Bridge down by the museum down there.

And we throw out a wreath about 10, 11 o'clock.

We love it.

A couple years ago, Memorial Day, we pack everything up and we go to the train to head into the city.

And because it's a holiday weekend, the train is jam-packed, solid to the gills.

We're lucky to get four seats next to each other.

It's not yet clear whether the pass will even reopen this season.

It typically closes for the winter around the first week of November anyway and stays closed until just before Memorial Day.

In May of 1983, as the Memorial Day holiday approached, they anticipated his passing would intensify.

We went out and hit various malls, showing our composite and alerting them to the possibility that the mall passer might be hitting during that time frame.

We not only did that in Washington, DC, but we set up sort of a band that would cover these common routes that we knew that he took, which extended across to Tennessee.

I was the first one to announce, and I actually had some of these notes written down right here, and it's May 28th of 2025 I announced that I was going to run for the U.S. Senate.

If Tommy decided to run for governor, which he said he was on Memorial Day, I think the day after, maybe two days after, is when I announced.

So I was the very first one.

And I was laughed at.

Not a problem.

Anyway, it was Memorial Day, and we were leaving a restaurant, and my wife insisted on walking to the restaurant back home to get to 10,000 Steps.

We were returning home to watch a movie, and while we were on the intersection of Union Turnpike and Fetchless Boulevard, our light turned green, and we began to walk to go home.

Unbeknownst to the two of us, there was a person speeding, first of all, doing donuts on Francis Lewis Boulevard, and then accelerating his car, going at a speed of 75 miles an hour in a 35-mile zone.
