Teodora Tomova ShakurHostSo transitioning into the job market, what was your search like? Did you target specific schools, specific geography? And if you feel comfortable, how many applications did you send out?

I don't remember the exact number, but I think I have applied to around 30 places and my search was pretty much targeted.

I did apply to a few private schools and schools in other countries, but public schools in the US were my main target.

The reason for that was I did not want to go through a big transition to a completely new environment.

So I did my PhD studies at the University of Kentucky, a public school in the US, and that's where I started my research.

And so I thought getting a job in a similar environment would help me to make the transition to the next phase of my career.

But before the market, like my husband and I, we sort of sat down and we're like, these are the places we want to live.

And You know, that, so we were geographically sort of very constrained, but we all, what was helpful is that we thought pretty carefully about what would matter to us in terms of a location, in terms of the kind of department I would be in.

And so before I even started the market, I had like sort of developed this like ranking of all the places that I was applying to and where I wanted to go and That really helped me psychologically in two ways on the market.

The first was it helped me stay grounded when new jobs were posted because I could very clearly be like, okay, that's not in my, you know what I mean? That's not in my, it doesn't have the attributes that me and my family need to be happy, so we're not going to apply.

Or if it does, if I do apply, if it fits in those criteria, where does it sit on my list? It also helped when I was kind of juggling offers because if one school came in, that was clearly better for us in terms of our life than another one.

So yeah, for us kind of filtering based on these few criteria upfront, though it limited my search considerably, and there are a lot of great schools I didn't apply to, it did make the decision process on the market much easier.
