When High Performance Breaks Your Body with Miguel Bautista

In this powerful episode of the SuperSelf Podcast Series, Pete Ferrari sits down with Miguel Batista, founder of CFS Recovery, to talk about chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, long COVID, burnout, nervous system dysregulation, and what happens when the same high-performance mindset that built your life suddenly starts working against you. At 19, Miguel was a driven athlete and personal trainer determined to become the best in a company of hundreds of trainers. He pushed harder, slept less, skipped meals, loaded up on caffeine, ignored heart palpitations, and treated exhaustion like another obstacle to overpower. Eventually, his body stopped cooperating. Miguel went from training clients and competing at a high level to being bedridden, repeatedly hospitalized, unable to feed himself, and dependent on his grandparents for basic care. After dozens of specialists, tests, treatments, supplements, and IVs failed to give him answers, an unexpected conversation with a psychiatrist changed the direction of his recovery. Miguel began approaching his symptoms differently, not simply as enemies to eliminate, but as signals from a system that had been pushed beyond what it could tolerate. Pete and Miguel unpack why high performers are especially vulnerable to the push-crash cycle, why identity loss can be even more devastating than the physical symptoms, and why “just push through it” can become one of the most dangerous pieces of advice for someone whose body is already demanding a different approach. This conversation is not about giving up ambition. It is about learning when discipline means pushing harder, and when discipline means finally listening to your body. **Episode Highlights:** - 11:27 – Why high performance can become a double-edged sword - 24:05 – Identity loss: Who are you when you can no longer perform? - 34:56 – Finding the right starting point based on physical, cognitive, and emotional capacity - 45:38 – How to recognize the push-crash cycle by looking at your six-month trajectory - 57:24 – Why recovery requires permission to become uncomfortable **Key Takeaways:** - The traits that make you successful can also push you past your limits. - High performers often try to solve health problems by pushing harder. - Your body does not care about your identity as a high performer. - Symptoms may be signals, not enemies. - Rule out serious medical problems first. - Chronic illness can destroy identity before it destroys hope. - Being productive and being healthy are not always the same thing. <!--THE END--> - You do not have to be bedridden to take your symptoms seriously. **About the Guest:** Miguel Batista is the founder of CFS Recovery, a global coaching and education platform supporting people navigating chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, long COVID, and complex unexplained symptoms. Miguel’s work grew directly from his own experience. After years of unexplained symptoms, repeated hospitalizations, dozens of specialists, extensive treatments, and periods of being completely bedridden, he eventually began working with a psychiatrist who introduced a very different framework for understanding his symptoms and rebuilding his capacity. After recovering, Miguel made good on a promise he had made during one of the darkest periods of his illness: if he ever found his way back, he would help others searching for the same answers. His team includes former clients who have personally gone through the recovery process themselves, bringing lived experience alongside the program’s education and coaching. Miguel’s long-term mission is simple: **Help one million people get their lives back.** Connect with Miguel Batista & CFS Recovery: - Youtube - Instagram - LinkedIn - TikTok *This episode is brought to you by Jaca Rare Sugar.* Jaca is a revolutionary, rare sugar called allulose with 0 net carbs, 0 glycemic index (diabetic & keto friendly), and 90% fewer calories than sugar.
