Jack's Backpack Jack checked his backpack for the third time.
Pencil case? Check.
Notebook? Check.
Water bottle? Check.
Everything was packed neatly and carefully, exactly where it should be.
Tomorrow was his first day at his new school, Cheswick Green Primary.
He and his mum had moved recently and that meant leaving his old school, his old friends and all the things he knew well.
He was now going to be the new kid.
Everyone kept telling him it would be exciting.
Jack, hmm, he wasn't so sure.
What if he got lost? What if he couldn't find anyone to sit with? What if everyone already had friends? His stomach felt wobbly whenever he thought about it.
Ready for tomorrow? Mum asked from the doorway.
Jack zipped up his backpack.
Zip! I guess, he replied.
Mum smiled.
You will be brilliant, Jackie.
Jack nodded unconvincingly.
That night, he left the backpack beside his bedroom door and climbed into bed.
He liked knowing exactly what was in his backpack.
The trouble was, he couldn't know exactly what would happen at his new school.
The next morning he looked over to where he had left his backpack.
Had it moved slightly? Hmm.
He opened it up and right on top of his notebook sat a bright red yo-yo.
He frowned.
He picked it up and turned it over in his hands.
