Episode 182: Bronx School Of Hip Hop

So what I wanted to talk about briefly on this episode is three weeks ago, the Bronx School of Hip Hop just opened up.

And I think that's an incredible, to me, it's like a milestone in hip hop to know that there's an actual public school called the Bronx School of Hip Hop with a curriculum that's teaching hip hop and got, you know, hundreds of students enrolled for the very first freshman class this fall.

Did y'all get a chance to see Mayor Mondami talk about it with Nas, Fat Joe, and some others on that video? What are y'all thoughts?

I think it was amazing to just, like he talked about, you know, we've got the history of New York being the foundation, but we want to continue the history of this, not just being the beginnings of hip hop, but still to be the home of hip hop.

You know what I mean? Where hip hop's still thriving and surviving.

And, you know, I think it's good them putting together the school where it's being taught the right way, the history being taught the right way, the culture's being, you know, shown and proved, you know what I'm saying, in the correct fashion.

You know? We got the chance to talk about this at the Hip Hop Education Center research meeting every Wednesday.

And I know Martha was there at the grand opening, and Rich, and Paradise, and a whole bunch of people that I've already worked with.

And it's an incredible thing that just needs to spread to other cities.

And that could be possible anywhere.

It just takes time.

It takes work.

It takes effort, and funding, and grants, and purpose.

um because that's something that we need i mean here in minnesota they just you know another afrocentric uh school based off the freedom school model we can do that for hip-hop in in various cities around the country in the world so it's just set i mean if you have to start in the bronx though where it all began so yeah i can't wait to visit it like i'm actually going to new york in april so i'm bringing some students out there for a trip

That's the main thing.

Because there's a lot of misconceptions of how it started, where it started, the elements and all of that.

But if it's, like I said, if it's being taught the right way...
