New Order's Technique Album

So this album was released on January 30th, 1989 on the Factory label.

And we'll get back to Factory.

Oh, will we?

Yeah.

Okay.

What genres was this? Alternative rock, acid house, dance rock, and electronic dance.

I'd say it's more like balleric beats meets acid house.

All

right.

So who were the original band members of New York City? Oh, that's Bernard Sumner.

He used to lead vocals, and he did the guitar and the keyboards.

And Peter Hook, who was bass and electronic percussion.

Right, and Stephen Morris, who did the drums, percussion, and programming.

And then Gillian Gilbert, keyboard, synthesizers, and guitars.

Gillian joined later.

We'll talk about that, too.

I

feel like I'm in trouble.

This is New Order's fifth studio album, and it came out after the band had stayed out of the studio for over three years following 1986's Brotherhood.

And they were basically not doing anything for long enough that NME and Melody Maker were straight up speculating the band was breaking up.

But sister surprise,

they come back.

And both magazines flipped their wigs.

Melody Maker called it a rare and ravishing triumph.

Enemy praised them for finally shedding the dark post-punk mask of their past.
