Nick WhiteGuestMike JesowshekHostFor business owners who've heard that oil and gas investing can create major tax benefits, what's the simple explanation of how this works and why it works in that factor?

I think the, the most simple way that I could describe it is the government loves to incentivize things that they want investment in, right? So think about, you know, under the Biden administration, solar, how did they incentivize solar investments? Well, they gave you these really awesome tax credits.

So the government wants to incentivize investment into energy production, right? We don't wanna be reliant on foreign nations for our energy sources.

And back in nineteen fourteen, they instituted IRS Tax Code two sixty three C, and essentially what that states is that clients that invest directly into these oil and gas drilling funds, they're able to take these large tax deductions that are based upon intangible drilling costs.

So we'll go into what those are later, but essentially, you know, a client that makes, let's say it's a one hundred thousand dollar investment, you're gonna get this very large tax deduction that's above the line.

It doesn't matter whether you're W2, ten ninety nine, K1 business income, or even capital gains.

And so a lot of high net worth clients, a lot of business owner clients are utilizing this space to add to what they're already doing, right? You're probably already maximizing your retirement accounts and probably already doing charitable donations.

And now the question becomes is what else is out there? And oil and gas has been one of those asset classes for well over a hundred years.
And you know, one concept I always talk about, and we've talked about this previously, is that a lot of people have this idea of, "Oh, I'm just gonna go buy a piece of equipment or buy a new vehicle or buy a new truck that I don't really need, but I'm looking for the tax deduction."
And when people come to me like that, I love to talk about kinda what this option can be, because it, it's very much the same thing, where you're getting a large deduction in year one by making an investment.
But instead of buying something that you don't really need just for a tax deduction, now we're getting the same tax deduction or very close to the same tax deduction, but we're also getting another vehicle.
Now, one thing that I'm a big proponent of and talking about when we're talking about tax strategies, people start to chase tax strategies, and they'll be like, "Well, I'm just do whatever I need to do to save on taxes."
And I'm a big proponent of saying, especially when we're talking about investing, if we're looking at real estate, if we're looking at oil and gas, you know, whatever it might be, I'm a big proponent of saying, "Okay, think about the tax piece.
The tax piece is great, but let's make sure that we have a clean and sound investment, and then that tax piece is just that cherry on top." So I don't want to invest in something that is a bad investment, but I get a tax benefit from it, because guess what? It's still a bad investment.
