S2E16 - Episode #24 - The Odyssey

Heard of it?

I haven't.

What is this? What's the source material? He just made it up? It's just an original Nolan work? He just

pulled it right from the Nolan head.

No, it's, of course, based on the epic poem by Homer.

Following the events of the Trojan War, Odysseus spends 12 years facing a series of challenges and trying to find his way back home, while a group of suitors tries to take his place as king of Ithaca.

This is the newest joint from Christopher Nolan of Oppenheimer fame, of Interstellar fame.

Maybe you've heard of him if you're a 19-year-old white boy.

Yeah.

Who is maybe his key demographic.

The table of frat boys sitting next to me at the diner over the weekend.

Yeah.

his key demographic dude I know we were just talking about this but we were not recording yet and it was just so silly dude it was just like a group of them and they just like couldn't get enough of it part of me was like should I just jump in here and be like hey guys uh he just lists like 50 other movies you should watch just other dudes out there yeah there's other dudes like you could be a big Denny guy Denny rocks man but

yes

uh yeah I don't know um yeah he's got some appeal

Yeah, this is a zeitgeist first.

Our bread and butter is talking about movies from a long time ago.

But The Odyssey is such a tour de force, such a cultural phenomenon right now.

And Joe and I have what I think are some pretty not mainstream thoughts about it.

And so we thought it was worth talking about as its own episode.

Because...

I am and have been a proud Nolan hater for a long time.

So when I first started college, I was once, Joe, I don't know if you can admit this yourself, I was once an 18-year-old white boy.

Were you ever an 18-year-old white boy?

No, I wasn't, actually.
