He has won a Golden Globe, a Tony Award, a BAFTA Award, and he has received two Academy Award nominations.

And in preparing for one of his roles as a Jesuit priest in Martin Scorsese's Silence, he actually spent some time, maybe the better part of a year, working with you, Jim, in spiritual direction and on the exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.

So maybe could you tell us a little bit about what went into Andrew's training to be a Jesuit?

Yeah, sure.

So, uh, Silence is about 17th-century Portuguese missionaries in Japan.

Mm-hmm.

It's, uh, based on the book by Shusaku Endo, and both Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver had to prepare for the roles, and Andrew decided he wanted to do the spiritual exercises of Saint Ignatius.

It, it, it, it, but, but it did, I think it did leave a tremendous curiosity in me and a longing in me to fill that void and to, to, or to search within that endless chasm of what it is to live a life of faith and live a life of spiritual connection, and to be a spiritual seeker, to seek that kind of union with anything greater than myself, um, anything that, that, that has a healing quality that is greater than myself.

The movie ended with one of the priests denouncing God to save others.

He continued to live his life denouncing his faith, keeping people from bringing religious items into Japan, and not practicing his faith.

So the movie Silence is based upon a novel by Shusaka Endo, who is a Japanese Catholic.

And I have read the novel, and it's, as is usually the case, the movie's good, the novel is far more compelling than the book.

There were some 400,000 Christians in Japan in the early 16th century until the shoguns took over and annihilated them.

There's a, a novel about that called Silence.
