Food Holidays including a heads up that POTATO DAY is August 19th, so be prepared Apples at the farmers market Music is how we mark time Why does summer suck so much? Does anyone have a Ninja…

So those of you who follow me on the socials know that we sent our neighborhood bestie, Jose, home to El Salvador to be with his family after he had a heart attack and couldn't work.

And I want to thank everyone who helped us pay for his travel and his medications and all the things he needed in order to go.

Every time we hear that Ice is in our county, we are on edge because even though he has a green card, that doesn't seem to matter anymore.

And now he's safe at home with his family, his sons and his daughters and his 15 grandchildren and his 500 banana trees.

And yesterday one of his friends came by to see if we needed them to cut the grass.

But it's so weird not to have him out in the garden or in the backyard at 7am on a Saturday or a Sunday.

The corn and the beans and the cucumber he planted are all growing great guns, and I've been WhatsAppping him pictures of that and his favorite pets of ours, Rufus and Clown Shoes.

I don't know when or how or why Jose became such an important part of our little family here in Virginia, but I guess sometimes there is no why, there just is.

And there's a little line from Johnny Sun's book, Everyone's an Alien When You're an Alien Too.

It's when two aliens find each other in a strange place, it feels a little more like home.

Although I'll be honest, I don't think there is home anywhere anymore, not Rhode Island or Connecticut.

And having Jose just three houses down our street, that definitely helped me think that maybe this was a place to belong.

But I think that I probably won't find that real feeling of home again in my lifetime.

You know, there's another saying that I see on all kinds of inspirational plaques at Michael's and Etsy and TJ Maxx, root where you are planted.

But anyone who knows anything about plants will tell you that not every plant will thrive or even survive just anywhere.
