It was just one week ago that Christians all over God's created world gathered to bring the season of Easter to a close as we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost, when we remembered the tongues of fire that descended on the diverse multitude present at that inaugural event, which we have since deemed to be the birthday of the Church.
There was present, as you remember, a plurality of ethnicities, cultures, and races occupying the same space at the same time, all recognizing, worshiping, and giving glory and honor to God, none of whom appeared to be fighting to lord it over any other, at least not at that moment.
It's as though they were one people, distinguished by country of origin and language, nonetheless with the distinct ability to understand, appreciate, respect, cohabit, and pursue the same objective, to receive the Holy Spirit even in their differences.
In that unparalleled mix of humankind, there seemed not to be any sense of superiority of one nationality over another.
Perhaps, just perhaps, they all understood that God created them all just the way they were, different from one another, but in the eyes of the Creator, the one who made them, God, they were all the same.
I could not help this morning to notice the cover of the bulletin.
I don't know if you've had time to look at the bulletin cover this morning.
How beautiful.
What a powerful depiction of the Trinity.
Thank you, Amelia.
