What is the Earth? The best way to understand it is to build one yourself. In this episode, we discussed how to make an Earth history observation kit, which is perfect for Cosmic Education in…
For ages 6 to 12, I'd like to introduce how to make an earth pod, which we're practicing at home.
The concept is to observe an ecosystem.
First, get a pot.
We use a big commercial planter, about 60 liters, but it doesn't need to be that large.
Around 20 liters should be enough.
For soil, get pumice, the drainage stones for the bottom of pots, plus akadama, a red granular clay soil used for bonsai, and dark, humus-rich topsoil.
Just those three.
Seal the bottom of the pot so soil doesn't leak out.
Then layer from the bottom.
Get a sapling from a nursery and plant a tree.
A small tree is fine, like a little blueberry.
Any fruit tree you like.
Something edible.
A Japanese pepper tree or a lemon tree would
be nice, too.
Those get quite large.
Start small and figure it out yourself.
Any
deciduous fruit tree works.
After placing the tree, add the topsoil.
