All Saints (A): Waterloo

Let's get into the Feast of All Saints.

We got Revelation 7.

Before we jump

into it, are you going to say anything about All Saints? What is it? I guess we should

tell people what it is.

Jake, tell them.

Are you worshiping saints? Yeah.

No, you tell them.

Isn't that Catholic? So the Feast of All Saints on Sunday, November 1st, or on November 1st every year.

This year it falls on a Sunday.

It is a time of the year where we remember those saints of the past.

And I mean, yes, in one sense, a saint is anybody who's in Christ, any of the people who are part of the body of Christ.

So Jake, you and me.

But this is a day that...

when it originally started was really to remember those folks that the church has recognized that sort of more formal title, the saints.

So we remember the martyrs, we remember those who were kind of the church fathers and mothers, all that.

Jake, you looked like you were about to say something profound.

Oh, I think, yeah, a lot of people don't know this, but this is like one of the major like feast days in the church.

It's one of the oldest feast days.

It goes back to like the early fourth century.

And basically, you know, in the Christian tradition, what happened was, is that, you was that you had, you know, you'd have minor persecutions happening all over the, and you know, and occasionally someone would die locally.

And so there would be, you know, at the Sunday service, they would remember.

And then there was this like swath of persecutions that swept across the empire.

And there were so many folks that they decided to, the tradition became, holding a common feast for all of the martyrs and those who had died the previous year.

And it eventually, you know, and it became a practice in the major cities of the early church, like Alexandria and Ephesus and Rome, but then it became a tradition across entire empire.
