The whole thing came about because it was an internal advocacy from our board members about wanting to broaden some of the perspectives that were at the leadership table.

There was also a lot of stuff happening in the Canadian fundraising and AFP context at that point that we wanted to make sure that there was representation of different experiences and different perspectives there.

Yeah, so I was already named as incoming chair when he was a board member on the foundation.

And right about six months before I was meant to take on the chair role, he actually stepped up, raised his hand and said, I would be willing to, even with a very short runway, do this together with Amanda.

And we didn't like we were board members together, but we didn't know each other very deeply.

So it's kind of a leap of faith, certainly for him and for me as well, I guess, of just kind of like launching into this together.

And I do want to say that, you know, Amanda did amazing work in doing the strategic planning for the organization.

So like throughout that process and being board members, like obviously we were board members and we were colleagues, but we just never had a personal equation.

So the anecdote I want to share is that when AFPIcon was in Toronto, we saw each other from across the hall and we just ran up to each other without like one person leading that run.

And everybody around us seems to believe that we have been in each other's inner circles for years.

But it was only six months before that we got introduced to each other in person.

And like because it was not post-COVID necessarily in 2024 leading up to this, but so much of what we were doing as a board that spends the whole country was virtual.

I have some reflections on why 2025 was the right moment or why, I guess, end of 2024, this decision was made.

It really fits with a lot of what we were doing at the foundation and a lot of what we wanted to do.

There's a lot of really important work as a national foundation that we want to be doing, not just for AFP members, but for all Canadian fundraisers to promote education, to fund research.

And the idea was kind of that we needed to increase our capacity in order to be able to achieve that scale up.

And having two people in that leadership chair was an important part of increasing that capacity.
