Rabbi Shais Taub on Marriage, Purpose, and the Shechinah: Giving, Receiving, and Mashiach ConsciousnessIn this podcast conversation, Rabbi Shais Taub discusses core relationship tools through a Torah…
Shais TaubGuestAyalaHostOkay.

The most basic tool is a way of measuring life in general, meaning a value system whereby you judge whether anything is worthwhile and how to define success, including your relationships.

If you don't have a clear idea about what the purpose of life is, I know that sounds very lofty, and it's, like, intimidating, purpose of life.
Mm.

But if you don't have that, it's very hard to determine whether anything is worth your time, whether it's worth, uh, blood, sweat, and tears, whether something is really just, uh, unnecessary or if it's, uh, something to walk away from when it becomes too difficult.

So, like, and that's where I really see people struggling, is they don't have a clear sense of what anything's about, you know, the big picture, why we're, why are we here, what's, what's the point of life.

And then relationships by definition are hard, and the reason by definition they're hard is because they involve two people.
Yeah.
Right.

Right? So if you don't have a clear sense of what the point of it all is, and then you're doing something that's hard, inherently hard, but you don't know what the point of it is-
Right
Yeah.

So that, I, that's my first thing is you have to know, a- as lofty as this sounds, what are we doing here? What, what's the purpose of life? And then how do m- male-female relationships, marriages fit into that? How are they a part of...

not only a part of that, I might even argue, um, the, the, the core or the essence of that.

Although sometimes when I say that people get upset because they say, "Well, what about single people? Are you saying that we're, uh, somehow not part of the main purpose of life?"
Right.

So I don't, I don't wanna imply that, but there's, there's no question that marriage is not just a part of life.
Okay.
