So to start off, I think the first question would really be, what is psychotherapy? Many famous scientists over the years have proposed their own definitions of psychotherapy.

But simply put, you can think of it as an umbrella term to describe a talk-based treatment rooted in the collaboration between a therapist and a patient.

Many professionals can also practice psychotherapy, including psychologists, psychotherapists, social workers, and medical doctors.

Your mind may immediately go to a patient lying on the couch while the therapist is in their tweed jacket and glasses asking them about their feelings.

This type of therapy is commonly known as psychoanalysis, founded by the psychiatrist Sigmund Freud.

However, this is only one of many forms of therapy, each informed by different schools of thought over the years.

This episode will aim to provide a brief overview of some of the most common, evidence-based forms of psychotherapy today.

This is also a timely short episode, where fields such as psychiatry, whose expertise lies in medication, are experiencing ongoing discourse about the role of psychotherapy in practice, coming in the context of mounting healthcare demands.

Hopefully, you will see in this episode that both biology and psychotherapy can coexist and often complement each other as important means to healing.
