The Israeli army told the Times of Israel newspaper yesterday that using 1,100 tons of explosives, it had demolished a, quote, "...strategic underground facility belonging to Hezbollah fighters beneath the mountainous ridge." According to the Israel Defense Forces, or IDF, the tunnel systems under Ali Tahir served as the, quote, nerve center of Hezbollah's Barer Regional Division, a unit tasked with the area of southern Lebanon that is north of the Litani River.
In a joint statement yesterday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz claimed the operation completes their consolidation of a security zone, but that Israeli forces would remain in the area to prevent the Iran-aligned Hezbollah militant group from re-establishing its presence and rebuilding its capabilities.
Lebanon's state news agency, NNA, said the bombing caused powerful tremors felt across Nebatia and the surrounding areas.
