St Isaac The Syrian: Homily 71 – P3 – “Why Is Hope So Sweet?”

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

We're still with the 71st homily of St. Isaac the Syrian.

I have a few things to open up with.

Not necessarily related, but all things to do with God are interrelated.

There's a wholeness in the word of God.

That's what brings everything together.

So I've highlighted two of St. Isaac's sentences that highlight the theme.

The first one is, and those who love this world cannot acquire love for men.

You have to think about that because what's that saying is, God is love.

If we don't have an understanding for the love of God, meaning that we love God, then we cannot love men.

We cannot love each other.

So that brings to the fore what I often talk about and which is in Scripture and what Christ has called us to do.

To love God with all our heart and all our soul and all our mind and with all our strength and our neighbour as ourself.

There's the order.

If we don't have love for God, it's not possible to have love for men.

That's what St Isaac is saying.

And the second saying, before I go into the entree that I said that I would, because of the outpouring of their love and compassion for all men, the saints that is, they resemble God.

Our aim is to resemble God because we were created in the likeness of his image.

Now I'll go into my entree that I said.
