You know, I was thinking, uh, you started as a sports journalist at a time when there really weren't that many pe- men, women in sports journalism.

And I'm just wanted to share, and maybe you can help explain, I mean, I'm kind of a nerd.

I loved, I don't know if you saw President Obama spoke to them at the All-Star game on Saturday.

What do you think is ex- you know, has triggered this explosion of interest in women's sports from everyone?

Well, it's so wonderful to see that because certainly when I was starting out, uh, women were not being encouraged in sports.

And in fact, Title IX, which gave women equality in sports, had only just passed.

And, um, when I was first writing about women's sports, I was using it as a way to talk about women and to talk about the possibilities-

And it's, it's just interesting to realize how much of sports is based on expectation, you know? I think the first year-

... that a woman was allowed in the Boston Marathon was in the, was in the mid-1970s, and, uh, within a couple of years, the w- best women's time had improved by, like, an hour.

It's not that women were running an hour faster, it's that they were so afraid of what they could do and being told of all the things they couldn't do.

So it's really exciting now to see girls being encouraged from a young age and knowing that they can go out and do their best and, and, uh, really achieve in, in sports.
