Mike McCarthy's QB Plans Shouldn't Be Hard to Figure Out

A Steelers postgame type of show here after Pittsburgh's 17-0 loss, now 1-1 in the preseason, to the New York Jets, who are improved from a year ago but were so lowly.

Still not much is expected for this season.

Geno Smith tore it up and was surgical early in this game against the Steelers secondary.

And the Steelers had most of their contributors in this game, the second preseason game, now with only three instead of four, usually get more of the group.

that maybe you're going to be expecting to go with and roll with early in the season.

Concern there, sure, again, it's preseason.

I'm going to practice what I preach.

What happens in these preseason games is, is borderline irrelevant.

I don't really want to go as far as some do to just scrap them all.

I think you'd need at least one or two to help guys make the freaking team.

You can't grade things off training camp, of course, especially for a team that's not tackling.

There's no live tackling.

You need to see some of that.

So I'm not going to scrap them all.

Most of the roster needs these to make the team.

You need these to fill out the roster.

You need these to scout opponents and who they drop and maybe you want to bring aboard.

You need some game film that's better than training camp, whether you tackle or not.

So, okay, you can have some.

I would be fine with getting rid of one more, but you can have some.

But they're really irrelevant, for the starters at least, especially these quarterbacks, to truly evaluate.

And certainly, certainly, nothing that goes on most likely against backups or guys that won't even be in the NFL, like was the case in the preseason opener against Green Bay, you can't take a quarterback slicing and dicing and carving up future insurance salesmen and say that's going to be enough.

Say that's enough.

That's your stamp for approval.

That's why I'm riding with a guy.
