Turns out the ship is capable of beaming Kirk and the others aboard.

Unfortunately, Enterprise is still badly damaged, while Khan's Reliant is in much better shape.

Kirk realizes they can't win a conventional fight, so he leads Khan into the Mutara Nebula, where interference knocks out the shields and sensors of both ships.

Kirk exploits Khan's inexperience with three-dimensional space combat.

Enterprise drops below Reliant, rises behind it, and delivers a devastating attack.

Reliant is crippled, most of Khan's crew is killed, and Khan himself is mortally wounded.

but Khan refuses to die without taking Kirk with him.

He activates the Genesis device, which will detonate and reorganize all matter in the nebula.

Enterprise's warp engines are disabled, leaving the ship unable to escape.

Spock quietly leaves the bridge and enters the radiation-filled engine room.

Knowing the exposure will kill him, he repairs the warp drive himself.

The engines come back online with only seconds to spare, and Enterprise escapes as Genesis destroys Reliant, kills Khan, and transforms the Nebula into a brand new planet.

Kirk then discovers what Spock has done.

He rushes to engineering and finds Spock dying behind the reactor room glass.

Spock explains that his sacrifice was logical.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.

He tells Kirk that he has always been his friend, gives the Vulcan salute, and then dies.

The crew holds a funeral and launches Spock's coffin toward the newly created Genesis planet.

Later, Kirk finally begins to confront something he's spent his entire life avoiding, death and loss.

David tells Kirk that he's proud to be his son, and the two embrace.

As Enterprise departs, Kirk looks at the Genesis planet, a world literally created from death, and begins to see the possibility of renewal.

When Bones asks how he feels, Kirk gives the movie's final emotional answer.

Young.

I feel young.
