Are the UConn Huskies positioned for a Power 4 breakthrough as new conference legislation could potentially give just them—and only Notre Dame—a crucial edge? Will the five-year independence rule lock…
CBS Sports had a new report out yesterday that capping conferences at 19 teams is a topic of discussion.
Republicans are pushing 20, it seems, which makes more sense for conference numbers to be even.
But the thing that stood out for me, which was put out on social media, was...
The comment that was made by a prominent CBS sports reporter that said, Notre Dame and UConn are the only schools not impacted by some new language.
And what this was is if you are in a power four league and you decide to move conferences, well, you need to become an independent for five years before you can actually join.
That sort of language that's in there, number one, it would stabilize things immediately.
Number two, I feel like it would open up a significant amount of opportunities for UConn as one of the only schools with Notre Dame to be able to move around freely because both of those schools have been operating as independents.
It was confirmed that this would allow Notre Dame or UConn or both to join the same or different conferences and not have to take that five-year period and sit as an independent.
But if you look at school or conferences like the Big 12, for instance, why have their member institutions not voted UConn in yet? There's a perception out there that they can take a bunch of ACC schools down the line after Florida State and Clemson and North Carolina and Miami potentially go somewhere else, among others.
So they've not pulled the trigger on adding UConn because they perceive that they could get something perceived bigger.
UConn, to me, delivers more than anything any school out there could deliver that could potentially be a candidate for the Big 12.
From a market standpoint, performance standpoint, facilities, fan base, you name it.
But if the language gets passed, and this bill gets passed with that language included that says, if you're a member of a power conference, You need to sit for five years as an independent before you can actually join a new conference.
