**Episode 34: The Live Well with Arthritis Podcast** *#34 Go to the Gig: Emily's Before, During and After Plan for Concerts with Arthritis* Last weekend, Emily was at the **Take That concert** in a…
Let me start with the science and the heat part of it, because I think it really does help to know what's going on.
So in humid, hot weather, a lot of us notice or may notice more swelling because the body dilates blood vessels and fluid can pool around already sensitive joints.
And so if you have any tendency to swell, then a heat wave and a concert can cause potentially impact you quite a bit.
So when you are hot and excited and you're having fun and you may forget to drink your water or maybe you're drinking the wrong things.
It can make you feel really awful the next day in a way that really piles on top of all the joint stuff that's going on as well.
And heat is a physical stressor in its own right because it raises your baseline of effort.
So everything you do, standing, walking, even just existing stressors, you know, existing in that environment of a festival, a gig, you know, things like a concert, things like that will cost your body more energy than it would on a mild weather kind of day.
And I do want to be balanced here because it's not all bad news, because for some people, warmth actually eases stiffness.
plus the exertion plus dehydration plus no rest and proper sleep and you know when you stack up you know on top of that the stress of getting to and from a venue of a festival or a gig you know that's all of that that's layered together and I call it with my clients the inflammatory bucket of water so you've got that bucket of water and you're adding loads of things to it and then all of a sudden that water is overflowing and you end up in a flare-up so it's about managing that overflow and preventing your bucket from overflowing.
But when you have these things stacking up in your water bucket, it can really just completely tip us over, essentially.
So I think this kind of heat is very different to when, say, for example, you're on holiday, you're by a beach, you're relaxed, it's warm.
You've got air con in your hotel room or in your Airbnb or wherever you're staying.
