So here comes a very interesting question that I got from a Rav in Eretz Yisrael.
Uh, this Rav wrote to me that he heard from someone that in his experience he saw a lot of people that made big events when someone in the family turned 70 or 80, and they had the whole entire extended family there, and then unfortunately a lot of negative things happened.
The Gemara says that if somebody managed to obtain a bunch of property that was left by an individual who passed away without any inheritors, usually a convert doesn't have inheritors, and he got this rich wealth, this abundance of wealth, and he wants to keep all this stuff, he doesn't want to lose his money, the right thing to do is to buy a Sefer Torah.
Rashi says it's a very strange thing, people talk about it, that a person got so much money without any effort, therefore it doesn't last.
And therefore, if he buys a Sefer Torah, it's a mitzvah that will make it last.
So the argument was when people talk it's not a good thing, things don't last.
To do something which could cause an ayin hara, a negative eye, like making such a big birthday party, making a big event, or someone was cured after he was sick, make a big soda sedah, a big bash, is not a smart thing.
And the question he asked me was, is this something you need to be concerned about or not? And my response to him was, it's important to make a big event, a public event to thank Hashem, the, as long as the most, most primary purpose will be l'shabeach, l'hodes or l'halel, to praise Hashem.
There's really no problem whatsoever of ayin hara, al tiftach pecha chashushon, one shouldn't open their mouth in such a negative way.
We have a general rule by, with a lot of things, it's questionable if it applies to ayin hara, but it's another discussion, mandale kapitle kabdilan, if someone is not worried, then Hashem is...
And the reason why it is not really a concern, the idea of a soda sedah, a meal of thanksgiving to Hashem, is indeed, the purpose is to publicize the miracles of Hashem.
The mefarshim say, the Sefer Noeh, Bar Abinella, a lot of them say that they would actually, the, uh, the, the mitzvah of the Karban is to bring with 40 challahs, and the reason you bring 40 different challahs is in order to invite your relatives and friends, because you can't finish so much, you have to finish it all in such a short time, leyorim velailah, day and night.
So you invite your friends, make a big party, you'll thank Hashem and praise Hashem publicly, like it says in Tehillim, "Lecha ezbach zevach todah v'shem Hashem ekra," sacrifice, zevach todah, sacrifice of thanksgiving.
I'll do this negdo no lecha lamai, I'll do this in front of the entire nation.
Avraham Avinu made a big party to publicize the miracle that he had with Yitzchak, "Vayaas Avraham mishteh gadol." The reason why there's no concern of ayin hara, it could be because with a Karban Torah, it's not something which is supernatural.
Ayin hara does apply even in regular things, but there's less of a concern of ayin hara with something which is not an abnormal, unusual kind of nes.
Besides for the fact, since the purpose is hodah, it's a thanking Hashem, it's a mitzvah.
