A big week for the Prime Minister's National AI Standards with the first hearings of the Joint Select Committee on AI. InnovationAus editor Justin Hendry and James Riley discuss the progress.
James RileyHost
Right now there's committees in process, there's discussion papers have been dropped.

Yes, written by the new office of AI, kind of the... their first outing, I guess you could say.

What's its purpose? I mean, it does seem remarkably well-timed that this joint select committee on AI is meeting today and their first meeting, and the discussion really gets underway, and here's this paper.
I mean, like you say, the committee's underway this morning, and as we sort of understand, that will feed in to this process of developing the standards, which is sort of happening in a bipartisan way with the Coalition as well.
So they've signaled that they intend to work with the government on what these standards look like.
And it's also, interestingly enough, come out just as the PM prepares to go to the US in San Francisco, Friday, US time, for meetings with Apple.
So it's, it's around sort of some of the age verification requirements that they've introduced, part of the online safety environment, is my understanding.
And there was a request from the former CEO, Tim Cook, earlier this year, inviting the Prime Minister to come and see their campus, and that is my understanding of what's happening tomorrow.
So he will be in San Francisco, and then he's going to New York, where next week there's all sorts of discussions with world leaders on AI and, and other sort of macro trends that are underway.
