Send us Fan Mail In Even Haezer 1:2, Rav Moshe deals with a Rochester woman, named Harriet, who refused to accept a get to allow her ex to remarry…
Um, it was a local shailah, I believe, from somewhere in Rochester or around Rochester, uh, and the story was as follows.
There was a young man, a Kohen, gets married, has a child, and his wife, uh, tragically passes away.
So now we have a widower with a young child, so he quickly...
I don't know quickly.
He remarries.
The issue was, he marries a gerusha, which is obviously asur 'cause he's, he is a Kohen.
That is not in debate.
It is asur.
He commits an issur of marrying a divorcee.
The gerusha's name was Harriet.
That was her name.
Um, that marriage does not last.
They separate.
Uh, she, they obtain a civil divorce, but she refuses to accept a get, as we'll see later in the teshuvah.
But the reason she refuses to accept a get is pretty much two reasons.
Number one, she doesn't believe in it.
She doesn't subscribe to that, uh, belief system.
And number two, she wanted to stick with him.
She didn't really care for him and didn't wanna do anything to, to, that he wanted to do.
Now, he wanted to try his hand at marriage a third time, um, especially because he has this young child.
Um, but he's stuck because his second wife won't accept the get.
Now, as we will discuss shortly, we know that there is a concept of heter mehira rabbonim, that while a man is...
There is potentially a way around it.
You get 100 rabbonim to sign off on his right to marry a second wife, but that would require a lot of time, a lot of money, and it's not the route he wants to, to go about.
