Bart Dorlandt discusses the practical applications and architecture of the BGP Monitoring Protocol (BMP) for service providers. Bart has developed a BMP application to help his customers monitor BGP…
Drew Conry-MurrayHostYou can do whate- it's software, right? You can do whatever you want to do on that by not loading-
So you're not pounding the router itself, the BGP router itself, with a whole bunch of queries and, and pulling data sets and manipulating things via the API.
... okay, so you're ingesting a B- a BMP telemetry stream, and now I can work with it offline and not have to worry about impacting, uh, the router itself.
Yes, and so there's, there's multiple layers to that, um, obviously, um, because what other, um, solutions are, is ha- having a kind of a route reflector and having everything as an iBGP peer and monitor that specific information.
And that works, right? If, if you're looking into, into whatever the, uh, is post-BGP algorithm, uh, then, then you can do that.
Um, when you look at BMP specifically and what it can do and how it's tightly integrated into BGP is you can have, um, all the databases, you can have visibility in all the databases saying, "Hey, I want not only to see what is in the log rip.
No, I want actually to see what, what is coming in from the peer, from the neighbor, and-"
I wanna see that after my policy filtering, where I do all the magic that is tied to my company, and I'm block, blocking these communities, or I'm inserting communities," uh, yadi ya.
Um, so that's the post-policy database, and BMP allows you to, to see those both, right? Or all three and five of them because at the same time you have that on the rip out as well, right? But, eh, let's do it [laughs] one step at a time.
[laughs] There's lots of places to, to be examining the various databases and states of BGP before it finally ends up in the, uh, in the forwarding information database.
Uh, and you get to look at all of this is what you're, you're pointing out here with BMP.
You can see pre, what actually was sent to you by your neighbor, uh, and then post after you've done, you applied your filters and your policies, you end up with something less or something different.
