Caleb is back from Brazil and flying solo this week, as Keith searches for a place to live after being the victim of a tree-borne assault. Apparently Keith upset the ents.
So you're stuck with me this week here on... gun day brunch and i want to start this episode off by i want to talk about an experience i just had so i was in brazil in sao paulo for shot fair if you don't know what shot fair is or you've never heard of it think of it like a smaller shot show for the brazilian gun market which i should point out brazil is the largest fire consumer firearms in south america
Like
that is, they have the biggest gun market down there and they are, man, they're dealing with a lot.
California ain't got nothing on the difficulties that the Brazilian gun owner, the hoops that the Brazilian gun owner has to jump through just to, you know, practice their sport, enjoy firearms, you know, practice their hobby or whatever it is, right? So like the first one, that is crazy to me is they have...
They weren't full-on Florida loosey-goosey, but they had loosened up the restrictions on firearms ownership.
They made it so that it was easier to get guns, you could own more guns, and then they had an election.
And as we're fond of saying, elections have consequences, and the consequence of this election... was that a lot of Brazilians lost their ability to own guns.
And one of the weirdest consequences was they banned 9mm ammunition, like new sales of 9mm ammunition.
But new manufactured guns sold to the consumer market with some exceptions obviously have to be chambered in cartridges that make less than 400 joules of energy at the muzzle right 9 mil makes more than 400 joules of energy so as a consequence for that like if you look at the revolver lineup that taurus has down there all of the models that we would get in the states that are 357 magnum are 38 special only in brazil every single one of them and honestly that's fine i like 38 special more than i like 357 magnum anyways 357 magnum is a rifle round guys i maintain this it is a rifle cartridge it's the best in rifles it's a great it is a great rifle round
but
i digress so that was you know that was what they did with their rifle rounds but then they had the issue of pistol rounds how do we make a pistol uh that is better than 380 but not quite as powerful as nine because for a number of cultural reasons no one wants to carry a 380 down there like 380 is viewed as garbage okay so no one's carrying 380s nobody wants to carry a 380 everybody wants to carry nines so they needed to figure something out so that people could carry essentially a nine which is where you enter the 38 TPC, which stands for 38 Taurus pistol cartridge.
Like it's like a nine millimeter minus P, right? It is one millimeter shorter in OAL than your regular nine mil.
let's ask my calculator because the standard factory load is 124 grain bullet at uh 10 at 10 20 so that's 124 times 10 20 that is a 126.48 power factor that would actually be a really good uh match ammo round but anyway the point is is that's what they did to get around that restriction was they made the 38 tpc and it's catching on down there you know obviously taurus chambers say a bunch of their guns in it we just launched in 1911 in it which is going to be a really great gun to shoot but that's just an example of the restrictions that the average brazilian gun owner has to deal with and i talk about that because i want to talk about the thing from shot fair that made me feel very appreciative of America's gun culture and gun people in America and how good we have it, like how spoiled we are when it comes to firearms ownership here in the United States of America.
