How to Defeat Recurring Sin

Yeah, so Romans chapter 5, this was the passage from yesterday's service.

It was a wonderful text to look at and think through, thinking about the imputed guilt that we receive from Adam, but much more the imputed righteousness that we receive in Christ.

And so, Phil, why don't you just kind of introduce this text to our listeners and kind of introduce what we're going to be talking about this morning.

Okay.

So it is a wonderful text.

It's a hinge text.

And so he's moving from, he spent the first four chapters clarifying our guilt and need of a Savior and how God saves us.

He justifies us through faith, not by our works.

He doesn't declare us righteous or he doesn't treat us as righteous because of our efforts, but because of the effort of Christ on our behalf.

And so having been justified by faith, we now have peace with God.

But why do we still struggle with sin then? If we have been set free from sin, if God has saved us from our sins, why do we continue to struggle with recurring sin? And that's really what Paul begins to address in chapters 6 through 8, really practically and really helpfully.

And so setting that up is Romans 5.

And so he kind of lays a theological groundwork for what he's going to be talking about in chapter 6 through 8.

How do we overcome habitual sin? How do we overcome the, you know, we have trained our hearts, we've trained our bodies, we've trained our minds, we've trained our feelings, we've trained our our social networking in patterns of sin all of our lives.

So overcoming those habits and overcoming those patterns is going to take some time, but by the power of the Spirit that is in us, we can have victory.

But many of us don't have victory because we don't have the right theological foundation from which that victory can grow.

And I think that's what Romans 5 does for us.

And so he presents, he explains why sin is in our lives, why we struggle with recurring sin, why we keep turning back to sin again and again.

And then he explains how God has set us free from that in Christ.

And then he begins to kind of He just kind of dips his toe in the water of the path forward,

know, the relationship of the law and the Spirit to our life.
