In the first First Not Only Network podcast episode, Director of Operations Asha Hunter interviews founder Janis Middleton about fear, career pivots, and building community for Black and brown women…
To boil it down to three things will be incredibly hard, but I think the things that I wish I had known at this time or at that time, I'm sorry, at their age, I think one would have been, yo, you don't have to wait for a title to have a voice.
You know, you were likely hired because you're smart, your education, your background, all of these things that are on your resume, the things that they know about you before you even come into the interview, right? And I think I waited so long before I had a voice.
And specifically in the advertising world, which is where I actually grew up, right? I had another job before that, but advertising was actually where I truly, truly, truly grew up.
And I think a lot of that and I say that because I think a lot of times when people see me today, specifically the younger ones, they often say, like, I want to roll like what you're doing.
You know what I'm saying? Like I cold switched, you know, what the authenticity you see today was I've always, I'm a sad.
Um, but I do feel as though there's a, there's a notion that you, the way that you walk in, you know, the first day is how you're going to end up.
And that's my second rule or second piece of advice, the way that you walk in and the role that you're doing today does not always have to be the role that you're going to end up in.
If it's a place where you want to work and you're really trying to get in there.
