#284- Treatment Interfering Behaviors (TIBs) with Alec Pollard, PhD

Well, that's a great question.

It goes back to case formulation that there are different, there's not a single cause for treatment or firm paper.

There are different factors and they're all embedded in our theory.

So if there are any clinicians out there, I'm going to list a few factors and they should not sound obvious.

unfamiliar to you.

These are factors that you use every day to treat anxiety and depression and OCD.

But these factors can also produce treatment-interfering behaviors.

So let's start with the example of not doing your therapy homework.

Now, you could say, well, the reason that people don't do their therapy homework is because they're afraid.

Okay, that's fair, and it's probably true.

However, every person who has an anxiety disorder is afraid.

By definition.

It doesn't distinguish them.

It doesn't distinguish the people who are Tibbers and the people who are not.

Right.

Because they're all afraid.

So there has to be something more than that.

And that's, again, what got me interested.

You know, I might have a 10 o'clock patient who is, as we say in the trade, kicking therapy butt and doing the homework and moving forward.

That person's anxious, but they're doing their homework assignments and blah, blah, blah.

Then the very next patient will come in, hasn't done their homework in three weeks.

They have all these reasons.

They can't.

They say blah, blah, blah.

Both of them have OCD or whatever.
