This week Brian, Whitney, and Jake bring the group chat to life. They discuss the Paramount/Discovery merger, the most influential films of the last five years, Exorcist vs Rosemary's Baby, the…
We've been kind of doom and gloom about Paramount trying to buy Warner Discovery for quite some time now.
Uh, especially in our group chat.
It was going to sell, and kinda the best case scenario was Netflix.
As, like, terrible as that is to say out loud, that was something I actually celebrated 'cause I'm like, if it's gonna go to, like, some conglomeration and we're gonna build a monopoly, fine.
I- Netflix is- is whatever.
Um, but now the fact that it's sold to Paramount, and more specifically, uh, David Ellison, um, it has major implications on just, like- like CNN is just a different color of Fox News.
Um, that- that's what it's gonna end up being.
I mean, look what they did to CBS.
Um, like that has almo- like 60 Minutes has almost no credibility now.
Um, even just like CBS News.
So like that- that was the part that, like, I was dreading the most.
But again, as, uh, as movie lovers, uh, I think a lot of people have just been doom and gloom because it's like they're trying to hold Ellison's feet to the fire about releasing stuff in theaters and not just in streaming.
But so I wanted to take a step back and I'm like, are things gonna get worse, or are things actually really bad now? Because I think things are actually really bad right now, and I don't think this merger's gonna change much at all.
Well, I- I- my-
As far as, like, the movie aspect of it goes
... my- my movie worry was nec- not necessarily...
Well, besides the theater stuff, my movie worry is about the people behind the scenes.
Well.
Because with- with, uh, s- two studios combining, you- you just need less people because, you know, they're basically one group now.
And-
Yep
... that was my concern.
'Cause it- it- it's the stuff with Fox and Disney, it- it does not leave a good, like, track record because that basically...
You know, Fox releases like six or seven movies a year, like from what they were doing, and Searchlight releases less movies every year.
So, like, that's the thing I'm worried about.
