**2026 Wild Card Round Recap** The Postseason is here, and the fireworks have already started. We’ll cover the highlights from the early round action, and preview the division series matchups…
So we'll start on the National League side with the Phillies and Braves.
We'll get to game one.
For the third time in the last five seasons, the Phillies and Braves match up in the playoffs.
This happened back in 2022 and in 2023, and the Phillies got the best of the Braves both times as the wildcard team facing their division rival.
Is that going to happen this time around? Well, the main issue with the Phillies heading into these playoffs is they limped in.
And that meant they had to use Zach Wheeler in game 162, who they would have liked to have gone here for game one.
Now they're going to get Jesus Lizardo back.
He's actually going to pitch very well, essentially matching Chris Sale in this game one.
But sort of the, you know, when you're looking at the Phillies season where they got off to a terrible start, they fired Rom Thompson, brought in Don Mattingly, kind of swung back or looked like they were going to chase down the Braves and take the division.
And then...
Kind of fizzled out.
And the story that's going to happen with these Phillies is the story that has been the case these last few playoffs.
There's going to be some great moments, and there's going to be some big, major mistakes that are frankly going to cost them.
And so here we are, game one, which was a back-and-forth affair.
They really could not get anything going against Chris Sale.
Again, like I said, Lozardo matching him almost pitch for pitch.
And so we get to the seventh, and the Phillies, they put a couple of runners on.
They force a bullpen change, and JT Real Muto, who had a really, Really, really rough season.
Two-run triple.
It's a 3-1 lead.
And Don Mattingly counters with, you know, knowing that he's going to have the heart of the order in both of these innings coming up.
Goes with Yohan Duran, who is really efficient in the seventh inning.
But in the eighth, after getting two quick outs, he allows an infield single to Michael Harris and then hits Ozzie Albies in a full count after getting ahead on him 0-2.
And that brings up Austin Riley, another guy who's really, really struggled this season.
