Ep 15: Champ Bailey, one of the greatest cornerbacks in NFL history. On Episode 15 of Extra Points, we chat with Champ Bailey, one of the greatest cornerbacks in NFL history — a 12-time Pro Bowler…
So since you've been in Canton, you're retired, enjoying retirement life, what are some of the things you've been involved in?
And basically, we reward all a- athletes in high school, girls and boys, you know, across the country with, uh, just recognition.
So any coach, parent, or whoever that knows these kids, they nominate these kids from where they sit, but they're the ones that are in tune with what this kid stands for, the character, the, the community work, the leadership that they display.
Well, ideally, there's a lot of corporations that want these kids to come work for them, whether it's some fast food joint or some tech school or some, you know, trade that wants to, you know, recruit these kids right out of high school.
And the reason that matters to me- Is because we all hang them up at some point.
[coughs] And we're not rewarding these kids for running the fastest, jumping the highest.
This is all in, this is all based off leadership, character, you know, com- their community, um, outreach, all the different things that they do or whatever propelled that leader in their space to nominate them, that's what we reward.
And these stories that these kids tell about the things they're into and the things they're doing in their communities, it's amazing.
I mean, every kid should win, right? But, you know, there are some that kind of s- separates themselves from the pack.
But the idea from, for every nominee is to put them in a position where opportunities are, are at least there for them after they hang 'em up.
And now what? I mean, I know I hung mine up at 35, 36, but I still had a now what moment, right? These kids are going through that right now when they don't have any idea what's next.
They just know that they're equipped for it, and a lot of them, I mean, they're ready for whatever.
The teamwork, you know, the leadership, the character building, the accountability, like, those are things that should be valued in life.
[laughs] Like, why don't we pour into these kids while they're in these hyper-focused environments? They are prepared for anything.
